Gold dollars were produced between 1849 and 1889, and had three types over their lifetime this example being the smallest diameter of any US coin to date 12,7mm. A gold dollar coin had, apparently, been proposed several times in the early 19th Century, but it wasn't until the California gold rush, and its resulting supply of
